Happy DNA Day from the NIH Library!

National DNA Day is an annual, global celebration of the discovery of the DNA double helix structure. This year is extra special—on April 25, 2023, both the 20th anniversary of the Human Genome Project’s completion and the 70th anniversary of the discovery of the DNA double helix are being commemorated. The NIH Library Bioinformatics Support Program joins the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) in celebrating this exciting day by showcasing bioinformatics software and genetics eBooks and audiobooks available from the NIH Library.

Bioinformatics Tools
The NIH Library provides access to a wide range of bioinformatics analysis tools and databases, including:

  • QIAGEN CLC Genomics Workbench: conduct next-gene sequence data analysis for any species
  • Golden Helix SNP and Variation Suite: perform complex analyses and visualizations on genomic and phenotypic data
  • Human Gene Mutation Database (HGMD): assess the novelty of identified gene mutations
  • Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA): visualize and understand complex ‘omics data and perform data analysis and interpretation
  • Partek Flow: analyze next generation sequencing data and create publication-ready visualizations

These tools are available at no cost to NIH staff (clinical, research, program support, and fellows), though most require registration. They can be accessed through a floating license, by logging into the NIH Library Bioinformatics workstations remotely (while on the NIH VPN), or by using one of the Bioinformatics workstations in person at the NIH Library. Online reservations are required for both remote and in-person use. Please contact Doug Joubert, Bioinformatics Support Program Coordinator, for more information.

About National DNA Day
National DNA Day commemorates the successful completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 and the discovery of the double helical structure of DNA in 1953. NHGRI began celebrating DNA Day annually on April 25, 2003, after the 108th Congress passed concurrent resolutions designating it as DNA Day. The goal of National DNA Day is to offer an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the latest advances in genomic research and how those advances impact our daily lives.
