Detailed analysis of text data requires understanding of natural language text, which is known to be a difficult task. However, statistical approaches have been shown to work well for the analysis of text data, to find patterns and knowledge discovery. This class will introduce attendees to basic concepts and principles, as well as a couple major algorithms in biomedical text mining and their potential applications. Hands-on experience will consist of text mining techniques using PERL, Python, and Java tools to preprocess PubMed documents and identify biomedical entities.
