OpenSCAD

OpenSCAD is a software for creating solid 3D CAD models. It is free software and available for Linux/UNIX, Windows and Mac OS X. Unlike most free software for creating 3D models (such as Blender) it does not focus on the artistic aspects of 3D modelling but instead on the CAD aspects.

Can you 3D print in color?

The printer has one extruder, one color. We change the rolls of filament at the back to change colors. If you prefer a different color, we can change it, or if we don’t have the desired color, they can bring their own filament and we will put it on.

How much does a 3D print cost?

There is no fee to print at the library if you work at NIH. However, you will need to provide your own filament (plastic). A roll of filament runs about $50 and you can produce 9-10 prints, depending on the size of the jobs.

Data Services

Data-intensive science provides opportunities for discovery, but presents challenges as investigators struggle to manage data.

How can I use one of the private study rooms?

The NIH Library has private study rooms for individual use. The rooms cannot be reserved. NIH staff can use them on a first-come, first-served basis. These study rooms are unlocked and valuables should not be left unattended. The rooms have a desk, door, and WiFi.

What do I do when asked for a password?

A priority of the NIH Library is to provide seamless access (by IP recognition) to all electronic resources. However, because some publishers are not yet offering the access through IP recognition we do have to accept password dependent access.

Where can I get reference help?

You may get reference help in person at the NIH Library Information Desk, located on the main level of the Library in the Reading Room, by phone at 301-496-1080, or online (you will receive a response within one business day).

How can I renew books I've checked out?

NIH Library books can be renewed for an additional four weeks, if there are no holds for the books. Checked out books may be renewed three times before the material must be returned to the NIH Library Information Desk.
