Biologists—Get Published With Help from the Library’s Editing Service
NIH Library staff help NIH biologists get published. We provide editing services in addition to both a physical and a virtual Writing Center. Located on the lower level of the Library, in Building 10, the physical Writing Center has desks where authors can work and shelves of writing-related reference books. Writing resources are also available around-the-clock via the Writing Center Web site.
Most importantly, we offer one-on-one editing by our staff of librarians trained in scientific editing. Send us your manuscript and we will read it thoroughly.

In our light editing service, we edit:
  • punctuation
  • spelling
  • word usage
In our medium editing service, we edit:
  • sentence structure
  • use of passive and active voice
  • content for clarity
Tell us the journal that you plan to publish in, and we will ensure that your style and content match the requirements of that particular journal. Journal articles, site visit reports, abstracts, posters, book chapters, and protocols are examples of documents we edit.

We can also help you create an EndNote library or Reference Manager database and show you how to use it optimally to populate your manuscript with citations. Formatting your document in the exact style of your targeted publication journal becomes a “snap” when you use these software tools.

It is difficult to find people well versed in English grammar and usage who also understand concepts like "cutaneous manifestations of internal disease" or "triplet excited states of disulfides," but our editors do because they have bachelor's, master's, or PhD degrees in science, English, or journalism, and expertise in multiple fields.

The feedback we get from NIH Library Editing Service users includes statements like "Excellent job! Your editing makes my essay much better and flawless." About the physical Writing Center, one user commented, "This is perfect. I do my writing and reading here. It is quiet. Excellent." And, always a winner: "The paper is currently in press in J. Neuroscience."

To request editing assistance, contact the NIH Library Writing Center Team by e-mail, but please wait to send your document until instructed.
