In addition to the cancellations listed below, the NIH Library has canceled its subscription to the “Pivot” database from Community of Science. On January 20th the Library received an invoice for $40,600 from Community of Science for this product. In light of its price, its relatively low use, and the Library’s current budget reduction, we made the difficult decision not to renew this subscription. This resource was especially helpful for identifying experts in specific areas of research. The NIH Library has prepared instructional material about how other databases can be used to meet the need for identifying experts. Please let me know if you would like a copy of this material or if I can answer any questions about the Library’s budget or collection.
Original Feature (from January 6, 2012):
The NIH Library’s budget for FY 2012 has been reduced relative to its FY 2011 funding level. This has led to the loss of contract staff, the cancellation of a number of journal and database subscriptions, the purchase of fewer print and electronic books, and cuts to other items in the Library’s budget. Many of the print journal subscriptions that duplicate electronic subscriptions are also being canceled. Following is a list of electronic journals, electronic books, and databases that are being canceled in FY 2012. Cancellations are based on multiple criteria including cost, cost per use, whether the cancellation of a journal title would have an effect on the National Library of Medicine’s production of PubMed/MEDLINE, and whether an alternative information resource is available for a database.
Thanks to the quick work and expertise of our library staff, we were able to negotiate successfully with many publishers to keep our 2012 journal subscriptions at or below 2011 rates. Without these successes, we would have been forced to cancel additional titles.
As before, NIH Library staff will make every effort to provide needed material through interlibrary loan whenever it is not available immediately as part of our collection. Looking ahead to FY 2013, we anticipate additional and more significant budget reductions. We are now preparing a timeline for FY 2013 cancellation decisions that will include a request for feedback from our customers. If you would like to comment on the reductions to the NIH Library’s budget and collection, I invite you to visit me in person, call me at 301-496-2448, or email me at keith.cogdill@nih.gov.
