Need a Private Space to Study or Work? Use One of the NIH Library's Locked Carrels.
The NIH Library provides locked carrels for use by NIH staff. These carrels provide a place to focus away from the office and lab. These secure cubicles include:
- a desk
- shelf and bulletin board
- high-speed Internet connection
- wireless capability
- cell phone access
- a locking door
Nine 7-day and three daily locked carrels are available for use by NIH staff on a first come, first serve basis. To request a locked carrel, stop by the Information Desk in the NIH Library, Building 10. Keys are charged out at the Information Desk and must be returned before closing at the end of the seventh day or sooner, if the customer no longer needs the carrel. If the key is not returned within one business day of the expiration date, an overdue notice will be sent to the user. If the key is still not returned within one week, the user’s library privileges will be revoked. There are no renewals of carrels.
If a carrel is not available, NIH staff may put their names on a waiting list. When a carrel becomes available, the names on the waiting list will be contacted in order of date the name was placed on the list. If the key is not picked up within two business days after contact, the carrel will be reassigned.
The Library also has a locked carrel available for physically-challenged NIH staff.
