What is social tagging?

Social tagging is the creating and managing of tags to annotate and categorize content. Tags are a type of metadata for which one or more descriptive words (keywords) are assigned to an asset (ex, photo, web page, article, person, book, email etc). Tags may be visualized in clouds:
