CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Discover Scopus and Web of Science: Complementary Giants
This class will focus on capabilities and features of each product, rather than on the comparison of search results. Much of the utility of these products is in the eye of the beholder and will satisfy different information requirements to different degrees. Learn how to use both databases to search for articles and how to use both to track citations and analyze research.

EndNote: Managing Your Search Results
Learn how to use EndNote© to download references from databases, to attach PDFs of journal articles to an EndNote record, to search, sort and group within the library, and to use EndNote with Word to insert citations and create a bibliography.

Genome Browsers
In this course, we will use the genome browsers from NCBI, UCSC and Ensembl. Used to view the assembly of the complete human genome, these browsers are valuable tools to identify and localize genes, and obtain information about them. In this course, we will see how to view different human genome maps/tracks and make best use of them. For example, the EST map can be used to identify undocumented exons or generate the alternative splice variants of genes.

Gene Resources: From Transcription Factor Binding Sites to Function
This course describes how to obtain information about a human gene including its genome, transcript, protein, and transcription factors regulating its expression. The class also covers information about single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the gene and which SNPs are known to be associated with disease.

PubMed: Understanding the Basics
PubMed is the National Library of Medicine's bibliographic database that covers the fields of medicine, nursing, and the biomedical sciences. Full text access to many articles cited in PubMed is available through the NIH Library. In this class you will learn how to effectively search, organize and download articles from PubMed.

Sequence Analysis: Making Sense of DNA and Protein Sequences
In this class, students will find a gene within a eukaryotic DNA sequence. They will then predict the function of the implied protein product by seeking sequence similarities to proteins of documented function using BLAST and other tools. Finally, students will find a 3D modeling template for this protein sequence using a Conserved Domain Database Search.

During the first hour, the instructor will walk you through an analysis of an uncharacterized genomic sequence from a GenBank record. During the second hour of the class, students will perform the same analysis on another genomic sequence.

Web Search: Thinking Beyond Google
Go beyond the standard web search tools and learn to search more efficiently; access the invisible web; evaluate web sites; use image and non-text search engines; search for scholarly information, news, people, and blogs; and customize your search results.
