CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

EndNote: Managing Your Search Results
Use EndNote© to import and organize references, insert references in manuscripts, and create bibliographies.

Microbial Genome Analysis
Learn how to access the microbial genome sequences and annotations, how to navigate and download the gene and protein datasets, and get information about genomic and comparative genomic analysis tools from NCBI, IMG and EcoCyc. The course will address practical discovery questions such as "Are there identifiable genes in microbial genomes that may be horizontally transferred?' and 'What are the differences between closely-related pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria?"

Protein Structural Analysis: Binding Sites to Distant Homologs
Learn how to visualize and annotate 3D protein structures using NCBI's Cn3D program, identify conserved domains(s) and ligand binding sites in a protein, search for other proteins containing similar domain(s), explore a 3D modeling template for the query and find distant sequence homologs that may not be identified in BLAST.

PubMed: Understanding the Basics
Use PubMed to find articles on your research topic in biomedical and scientific journals. PubMed is the National Library of Medicine's premier bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine and preclinical sciences, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine and the health care system. It includes journal article citations and abstracts from MEDLINE and other sources. Many of the citations lead to full-text articles available online through NIH Library subscription agreements.

Scopus & Web of Science: Rich with Citations
Learn how to use both Scopus and Web of Science to search for articles and augment your retrieval. Both databases can track citation counts and analyze research in a variety of ways.

Sequence Similarity Search: BLAST
Learn nucleotide and protein sequence similarity searching using NCBI's BLAST family of programs. Exercises range from simple searches to creative uses of the BLAST programs.

Web Search: Thinking Beyond Google
Go beyond the standard web search tools and learn to search more efficiently; access the invisible web; evaluate websites; use image and non-text search engines; search for scholarly information, news, people, and blogs; and customize your search results.
